ANNUAL REPORT 2015

CARP AVALON CHAPTER #1

The past year has been a fairly busy one for CARP Avalon Chapter #1.

The 2014 Annual General Meeting was held on February 5 at Tiffany Village.  The membership was given a presentation by Clarice LeGrow from the Canadian Red Cross on the subject of “Being Prepared-A Guide to Personal Preparedness”. Ms. LeGrow spoke about many of the misconceptions of not needing to be prepared, leaving a large percentage of people being vulnerable in an emergency or disaster. The business of the AGM was conducted by President Edgar Williams, who provided the President’s Report, the Financial Statements were presented and accepted, and the election of Directors took place. The meeting adjourned with refreshments.

In March, the Board reconvened and welcomed Kimberley Street, a Staying in Place specialist to the meeting. She explained her credentials, that she is certified at aging in place as well as a specialist in Canadian residential accessibility. Kimberley said that the demographics of seniors indicate that they want to stay at home as long as possible but that it may be necessary for the home to be renovated to afford more comfort, agility, and accessibility. Her business will do a consultation with the homeowner and create a living document that offers renovation ideas to accomplish easier living; she can get quotes for the renovations and could team up with real estate if moving to an alternate location is the better option. Where cost is an issue, Kimberley can advise on Government subsidies. The Board agreed to consider her offer of a session for the membership and will establish contact in the future. As a limited number of Directors were present at this meeting it was agreed to defer the election to next month.

In April, the Board elected the officers for 2015 to the next AGM: Sharron Callahan (President, effective June 6); Ed Williams (Past President); Lorraine Best (Vice-President); Ray Rose (Treasurer); Secretary (unfilled).

In May, the Board held a regular meeting and planned for the next meeting of the general membership in June.

On May 21, Board Director Best attended the Faith Housing Forum at the Lantern. The faith community is doing a lot to address homelessness, including seniors’ homelessness.

On June 9, President Callahan made a presentation to the Provincial advisory Council on Seniors and Aging on issues of concern to older persons. The intent was to establish a relationship that would ensure consultation with older persons when advice is being provided to Government.

On June 10, the Board held a regular meeting prior to a special luncheon held for Ed Williams to recognize his contributions to CARP over the years and the completion of his term as President. This was followed by a meeting of the general membership where Sharron presented an overview of our Chapter’s progress on our strategic operational goals, and invited suggestions for informational sessions that the Board may pursue. Sharron later offered public recognition for Ed and his years of dedication and service to CARP Avalon Chapter.

On June 11, President Callahan and Director Ludlow attended Seniors Day at City Hall.

On June 15, a number of Board Directors attended the World Elder Abuse Workshop sponsored by the Seniors Resource Centre and the Salvation Army.

On June 23, President Callahan attended the Premier’s Summit on Crime and Community Safety.

On June 25, Ed Williams and Sharron Callahan co-hosted Seniors Day at MUN Botanical Gardens, which is an annual event to which CARP Avalon Chapter has provided financial support. Despite the wet, cold weather, the event was well attended and there was a lot of interest in CARP. Information materials were circulated.

On July 16, Ed Williams and Sharron Callahan attended the joint session sponsored by CASW, CMA, and the NLMA to raise the health issues of concern for older persons due to the impending federal election.

On July 23, Sharron Callahan attended the Roundtable sponsored by the NDP to address their platform concerns with the public/private/partnerships plan of the current Government for long term care facilities.

Since election, President Callahan has engaged in a number of Chapter check-in calls with National and attended the Annual General Meeting in March.

In September, meetings of the Board resumed.

On September 28, our Chapter sponsored a flag raising ceremony at City Hall in celebration of National Seniors Day, with the Mayor reading a proclamation in Council declaring the week of September 28-October 4 as Seniors Week in the City. The Provincial Government has approached President Callahan to possibly do a larger Confederation Hill event next year.

On October 1, our Chapter co-sponsored with the Coalition the first of two political debates on issues affecting seniors. This first debate was pertinent to the federal election and featured Seamus O’Regan for the Liberals and Ryan Cleary for the NDP. The Conservative candidate did not confirm and while he attended, he did not take the podium. A lively debate ensued and it was felt the evening was quite successful. There was significant media coverage leading up to the evening.

October 4, regular Board meeting was held.

On October 16, Sharron Callahan attended the Vibrant Communities Roundtable on Poverty and Homelessness.

November 4, regular Board meeting was held.

November 9, Provincial Debate was held at the MUN School of Medicine Auditorium. Many thanks are due Dr. Roger Butler for his support in organizing the venue and topics for discussion. Those present included Cathy Bennett for the Liberals, Allison Coffin for the NDP and Minster Clyde Jackman for the PC’s. The debate was quite feisty at time. Pressure will now have to continue for change on chronic care as promised by the Liberal Government in their election platform. The debate was well attended.

December 2, regular Board meeting held.

December 8, Directors Callahan, Williams, and Best attended the Seniors Housing Forum at City Hall.

Meetings recessed for the Christmas season and have resumed, effective January 13 and February 3, 2016.

The Coalition remains very active and outspoken on issues impacting the health, financial, and social well-being of senior persons. CARP Avalon Chapter #1 remains a participating organization.

As this year comes to a close, the Board acknowledges the contributions of Directors Pat Whelan, Doug Tilley, and Roy Church, who for different reasons have had to step back from the Board. Condolences are also offered to the family of Don Dooley, who passed on November 4. During the year, the Board welcomed new Directors Janet Wheeler and Neil Hamilton.

A special thank you to continuing Directors Ed Williams, Lorraine Best, Cyril Ludlow, Maurice Brewster, Janet Wheeler, Neil Hamilton, Ray Rose, Cyril Ludlow, and Sharron Callahan and a warm welcome to those potential Directors elected today.
